Two Churches Merge
Bethany Baptist Church and Eagles Nest Community Church are excited to announce the merger of the two churches. The first worship service of the new congregation was held at Bethany, 2740 Nadeau Road, at 11 a.m. on Sunday, August 9, 2017.
Pastor Rexford Jones (Pastor Rex) of Bethany and Pastor Louis Barnett (Pastor Louie) of Eagles Nest serve as “co-pastors” for the new church. They have been friends for over 35 years and have worked together in Monroe and in overseas mission fields. Rex Jones has been the pastor at Bethany since 1995, and Pastor Louie founded Eagles Nest in 1991.
Pastor Rex and Pastor Louie began exploring the possibility of a potential merger in March 2015. As conversations continued between the pastors, they realized it was a unique opportunity for these two churches to come together. Each church had resources that the other would benefit from and it seemed a perfect complement.
A comparison of the doctrine, vision, values, and ministries of each church revealed that Bethany and Eagles Nest are like-minded and doctrinally aligned with each other. The personality of each church may be unique, but the vision and mission are similar. Both have an uncompromised commitment to the Word of God, and both want to honor God by using their gifts and abilities to advance God’s purposes. Both churches have similar ministry structures -adult bible study groups, children’s ministry, AWANA and youth ministry, and missions’ sponsorship. Eagles Nest has many successful outreach programs that will continue to be an important ministry of the new church.
Each church’s leadership held several meetings to discuss uniting the two churches. During May, June, and July, both congregations spent time getting to know one another through Sunday worship service visits, fellowship “pot luck” lunches, sharing in a Memorial Day celebration, and a joint Baptismal service. In July, Eagles Nest members enthusiastically affirmed the merger and Bethany’s membership unanimously approved the merger at their Quarterly Business Meeting on July 12. With the help of continuous prayer for God’s leading in bringing both churches together, the overwhelming broad support from both church congregations confirmed the validity and strength of a positive unification.
The site of the new church is the existing Bethany building. The Sunday Worship Service is a combination of Contemporary and Traditional music with a pertinent scripture based message. Prayer for personal healing, guidance, comfort, and salvation is readily available.
